Abstract

<PICT:0990336/C1/1> Ferrous sulphate monohydrate is decomposed to the oxide in a multiple hearth furnace using sulphur as fuel, which is supplied in solid form to a plurality of hearths. The furnace consists of cylindrical casing 1, with hearths 4, of refractory material; a rotating rabble mechanism 2; and a surrounding of sheet iron 3. Some of the sulphur, e.g. 25%, may be supplied to drying hearth (16) with the ferrous sulphate, which is then conveyed transversely over each hearth by obliquely set rabble blades 9, so that it falls alternately through apertures 5 and 6, and finally out at 17 after cooling on the lower hearths. The rest of the sulphur is supplied to alternate, upper and middle hearths only, by means of hoppers 14, screw conveyers 15, and pipes 13, which project a short distance over the hearths, and may have flap valves to prevent gases escaping. Pipes such as 13 may also supply sulphur through the walls above apertures 6, where it mixes with the falling material. Gases from roasting (containing SO2) are drawn off at 11 to extract chamber 10, and may be conveyed to a sulphuric acid plant. These gases may be heated, e.g. from 650 DEG to 850 DEG C., and used to generate steam in a waste-heat boiler.
