Abstract
Iron oxide is reduced by means of a solid carbonaceous reducing agent in a rotary kiln in which the flows of charge and gas are co-current, the heat of the exhaust gases being used at least in part to heat and/or dry the sponge iron which is separated from the kiln discharge after the latter has been cooled, preferably by immersion in or spraying with water. The reducing agent may be coal of high volatile content and a particle size of less than 4 mm., and may be blown into the charging end of the kiln in a stream of oxygen-containing gases. After use for heating and/or drying the sponge the gases may be used, possibly after combustion at the point of use, to pre-heat or dry the kiln charge. In other applications the gases may be used to harden pellets formed from the iron fines produced, or for steam raising. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, two kilns are used having their flow directions in opposition so that a part of the hot exhaust gases from each may be conveniently used to heat the charge and/or combustion air of the other.
