[Class 38 (v)] [See also Group XVIII] Synchronous-motor clock mechanism, for driving clock hands or time-switches, with an auxiliary movement in reserve in which a coupling wheel 7 connected to the hands &c. is coupled to the synchronous-motor 1 if current is flowing and to the auxiliary movement 2 if current fails, is characterized in that the means for changing the coupling wheel's connection are connected to the planet wheel of a differential, of which one sun wheel 15 is driven in one direction from the synchronousmotor 1 (by gear 16) and a second sun wheel 17 is driven in the opposite direction from the auxiliary movement 2 (by gear 18) at a slower speed. The lever 10 carrying the shaft 8 of the pinion 7 is on a shaft 11 connected through a friction coupling 12 to the planet wheel shaft 13. If current is flowing, wheel 15 rotates faster than wheel 17 and arm 10 is lifted to enmesh wheels 7 and 4. At current failure wheel 15 stops and wheel 17 lowers arm 10 until wheels 7 and 6 enmesh ; thereafter clutch 12 slips.
