439,504. Spring-drum apparatus for adjustable suspension. RIESS, C. A., 99, Aldwych, London. June 8, 1934, No. 16972. [Class 78 (ii)] [See also Group XXXVI] In order that a counterbalancing device may be installed in any existing fitting without dis. mantling the device or the fitting, a spring-drum 1 is mounted in a supporting bracket 2, and is provided with means, such as an open channel 8 in one of the cheeks of the drum, or an attachment such as a hook on the curved surface of the drum, for engagement with the suspensory cord 5. Open guides 3, 4 provided at the ends of the bracket engage the cord 5 on opposite sides and act as a braking device. An auxiliary braking force is produced by adjusting the wing nut 9 on the spindle 6 to vary the pressure between the drum and the back plate 14.
