Vehicle windows; sashes balanced by springs; vehicle-window opening and closing apparatus.- A vehicle window is balanced by a spring so as to return automatically to a given partiallyopened position when released. The spring- controlled pulley 1 and cord 3 attached to the sash at 3<b> and passing over an adjustable guide pulley 3<a> return the sash when released to a position determined by the tension of the spring 4. To hold the sash in any position, braking devices are provided such as those described in Specifications 249,227 and 261,965, comprising spring - pressed wedging devices 5, 6 acting on the surface of the pulley 1 under rollers or abutments 7. Either brake may be released by the handle 10 and a sliding piece 9 engaging the upturned ends 5a, 6a of the brakes. One brake may be used, engaged with the, drum by means of a spring and roller and adapted to be released by a cam provided with a handle and acting on a link &c. engaged beneath a projection on the brake. The handle 10 may be mounted on a screw-threaded spindle by which it is adjustably clamped in the slot 10<a> of the bracket 2<a>. The device is mounted on a panel suspended from the sill &c. by the bracket 2<a>. An adjustable jockey pulley may be provided for tensioning the cord. Instead of a single balancing spring, a pair of opposed springs may be used the tensions of which are adjusted to return the sash when displaced to the desired position.
