[Class 39 (i)] The electrode system includes a large number of rod-like electrodes which are furnished either singly or in groups, with external leads whereby they may be selectively grouped. The rods may be arranged on a cylindrical surface and sealed into an annular or flat pinch or on a number of parallel plane surfaces and sealed into a flat pinch with appropriate bendings. They may surround a cylindrical or flat cathode and be surrounded by a cylindrical or box-shaped anode. Insulating bridges may be secured at the upper or lower ends of the rods or at both, and the lower bridge may be supported from the envelope, the pinch or the stem, connection being made to the leads by flexible wires. The rods may be given different biasses and fed with input potentials or some of them may be positively biassed or connected to the cathode whilst the remainder serve as control electrode. Or the rods may be connected all together or in two equal groups, to provide a single control grid or a pair of grids.
