Abstract
862,024. Thermionic valves. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. June 7, 1957, No. 18244/57. Class 39(1). An electric discharge device comprises a cathode 1 having a cylindrical electron emissive surface, and at least one other electrode which can be the first grid electrode wound on rods 2, 3 and the second grid electrode wound on rods 4, 5, each supported at corresponding ends by cross-members in separate metal plates 7, 8, 9, the plates being generally circular and each provided with a pair of diametrically opposed ears engaging ceramic insulating brushes 13, 14 on support rods 11, 12, and the plates being spaced from each other by ceramic insulating collars 15, 16, 17, 18. One end of the anode 6 is assembled on the support rods 11, 12 and insulated from the plate 7 by insulating collars 19, 20. The assembly is held firmly between collars 24, 25, 26, 27 welded to the supports 11, 12. The supports 11, 12 can be of metal or insulating material. The metalplates 7, 8, 9 are made so that they can bend and provide longitudinal compliance for the assembly due to change in temperature. At the lower end of the assembly as shown in Fig. 3, plates 28, 29, 30 which are comparatively rigid but otherwise similar to plates 7, 8, 9, are provided with holes such as 31, 32, 33, through which connections to the electrodes are made, and one hole such as 34. The stem wire for the second grid is connected into hole 34 in plate 30, the stem wire for the first grid is connected into hole 35 in plate 29 visible through hole 32, and the stem wire for the cathode is connected into hole 36 in plate 28 visible through hole 31.
