Abstract
438,178. Electric induction furnaces. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. Jan. 30, 1935, No. 3062. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1934. [Class 39 (iii)] [See also Group XII] In a combined electric and combustion heated Siemens-Martin furnace, the electric heating is effected by induction, one or more open iron spokes 4 being provided with extensions 3 which carry the pole pieces 1 embedded in the furnace brickwork. The pole pieces 1 are cooled by cooling boxes 6 and their inner ends are protected by caps 7 of ceramic material. In the form shown, two yoke systems are connected by members 9, the limbs 4, carrying the coils 5, being disposed below the furnace hearth and the polepieces 1 extending into the front and rear walls a, b. The limbs of the yoke may also be arranged horizontally around the furnace or one half thereof, or they may take the form of a closed ring encircling the furnace either vertically or horizontally. According to the disposition of the yokes, the polepieces are arranged in the front and rear walls a, b, in the furnace roof and hearth, or in the end walls c, d. In the latter case, the waste gas flues 10, normally disposed in the end walls, would be located in the front and rear walls a, b.
