Abstract

678,262. Couplings. REVERE COPPER & BRASS, Inc. Aug. 20, 1945 [May 20, 1944], No.. 21211/45. Class 38 (i). [Also in Groups XI and XII] An electric furnace (see Group XII) is heated by graphite resistor bars 119 (see Group XI), the end bars being coupled to graphite extensions 130 by graphite sleeves 127. The extensions 130 are spaced from insulating sleeves 133 by asbestos packing 135. The terminals 137 are provided with passages 143, 144 for cooling- water, and the passage of air to the interior of the furnace is prevented by a sleeve 147 of helically-wound asbestos-packed metal strip which is welded to the metal framing of the terminal assembly. The two terminals are joined together by a bar 167 bolted at 177 to the insulating plates 146, the bar being rigidly supported on posts. To prevent the changing of the magnetic flux from heating the plates surrounding the terminals, the terminals are carried in non-magnetic panels 181, e.g. of silicon bronze, arranged as insets in the metal oven casing, and the magnetic path along the bar 167 is interrupted by an insertion of non- magnetic material.
