Abstract

In a finishing process for woven and knitted fabrics of cellulose fibres so as to render them non-shrinking, the unfinished fabric if desired after cleaning is treated with alkaline lye, excess lye expelled if necessary by passing the fabric between pressure rollers, and then the unrinsed fabric wound under rolling pressure and left so wound for a period, e.g. 2 hours, then left loose for about 12 hours if desired with partial drying and finally washed and neutralized. The concentration of the lye may be adjusted for any desired degree of shrinkage or to suit the stretching which occurred during the weaving or knitting of the fabric. Wetting-agents may be added to the lye, while, to control the degree of shrinking, glycerine, alcohol or acetone may be added.
