[Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] A combined detector-oscillator for heterodyne reception comprises a multi-grid valve V in which the two grids G1, G2, nearer the cathode K are coupled over the circuit L<1>, L1, C1, to generate local oscillations, the third grid G3 acts as a screen and the fourth grid G4 has signal input voltage applied to it. A fifth grid, acting as a screen, may be interposed between the anode A and the grid G4, and be connected within the valve to grid G3. The bias Eg4 applied to the grid G4 may vary in accordance with received signal strength. The grid G4 may have a non-uniform mesh or pitch.
