Abstract
434,645. Windscreen-cleaners. FOSTER, A. A., 563, 18th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. Feb. 5, 1935, No. 3719. Convention date, Feb. 5, 1934. [Class 138 (i)] [See also Group XXVI] A windscreen - cleaner more especially for use in aircraft is operated by air displacement and has its blade rotatable about a longitudinal axis, the blade taking up an operative position transverse to the direction of air displacement for operation by the resistance of the air, as the vehicle moves, and turning parallel to the direction of air displacement for return movement by mechanical means. In the construction shown, the wiper blade 20 is carried by a housing 1 which is pivotally mounted on a sleeve 4 carried by the windscreen frame. The blade is connected to a crank 19 pivotally mounted in the housing and connected to one end of a spring 22, the other end of which is connected to an arm 12 fixed to the sleeve. A spindle 13 within the sleeve is provided at one end with a wing nut 14 with lugs 15 adapted to engage in slots 9 in a castellated nut 8 screwed to the sleeve 4. The nut 14 is pressed against the end of the sleeve by means of a spring 16 engaging a pin 17 and a torsion spring 18 secured at one end to the inner end of the spindle and at the other end to the housing 1. The wiper is operated during the movement of the vehicle by the resistance of the air causing the housing to move about the spindle 13 against the action of the spring 18, the crank 19 eventually being snapped over by the spring 22 so that the blade is moved about its axis to a position parallel to the screen. The torsion spring 18 returns the housing to its former position. The resistance of the spring 18 can be adjusted by operation of the wing nut 14 to select the slots 9 with which the lugs 15 engage.
