432,287. Clutches; variable-speed gearing. DARLING & SELLERS, Ltd., DARLING, P., and DEEMING, D. W., Airedale Works, Keighley, Yorkshire. Feb. 7, 1934, No. 3969. [Class 80 (ii)] Relates to clutch mechanism by which a pulley 8 may drive the shafts 9, 2a alternatively so as to transmit a variable or reversible drive to a lathe or other machine tool through trains of gearing (not shown). According to the invention, clutches 3, 3a are enclosed in the hub of the pulley 8 and are actuated by a sliding inclined member 13 operated by a rod 16a arranged within the shafts. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the sliding member 13 acts on a threearmed lever 11, which acts on the clutches through push-rods 12, 12a. The presser plates 6 carry rods projecting into the part 10 of the hub and carrying return springs. Each clutch is adjustable by a screwed ring 7, which may be rotated by removing a segment 8w, of the pulley hub and inserting a tommy-bar into a recess (not shown) in the ring. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the cam 13 acts on toggle levers 20, 20a acting directly on the presser plates 6.
