Abstract

115,778. Macnab, J., and Smith, G. H. Dec. 20, 1917. Turning.-In a multiple-gear headstock for lathes or other machine tools, shown diagrammatically in Fig. 3, and in which the primary gear M - - T is of the friction-clutch operated type, having clutches C - - F, and the secondary gear W - - Z has clutches of the sliding-gear type, the means for operating the sliding gear is so constructed that the clutch-operating bar 13 of the main clutch in the driving-pulley 14 is disengaged before either of the sliding-gear clutches are put into action. Also, the direct-drive pinion H and clutch A, and the reverse-drive pinion J and its clutch B are both mounted on the driving- pulley 14<a>, and operate through all the speed changes. The handle for sliding the clutch gear G operates through a pin and segmental slot, allowing considerable lost motion, during which motion in either direction the main clutch is disengaged, and re-engages after the sliding portions have engaged.
