489,195. Gear-cutting. CRAVEN BROS. (MANCHESTER), Ltd., GREENWOOD, J. R., and OWEN, W. April 8, 1937, No. 9978. [Class 83 (iii)] In a gear - hobbing machine, the long shaft a between the column j and the work table is driven at relatively high speed, and change speed gearing k is interposed between this shaft and a short shaft f carrying the master worm g which drives the table, thus reducing torque stresses in the shaft a when cutting large gears. The change speed gearing comprises gears b, c engageable selectively with gears d, e on the shaft f. For cutting large gears the pair c, e is used to give a low table speed and for cutting small gears the pair b, d is used.
