Abstract

[Class 39 (i)] In tubes in which the focal area is the outer, approximately conical surface of an anode bombarded with electrons transversely to its axis, the X-rays being emitted axially of the anode, the vertical angle of the cone-like anode is 30‹ or less and its surface is bombarded completely and uniformly. The anode may be a cone of vertical angle 22‹ or a hyperboloid and may be cooled by circulating cooling medium within it or by embedding it in copper. Helical, hot wires n co-planar with and parallel or inclined to the axis of the anode cone a are mounted around the cone within a metal casing h apertured at m for the emission of the rays. The wires n are connected in series or parallel and are at the same potential as the casing h or at a different potential. The wires n are close to the walls of the casing h, and auxiliary grid or rod electrodes o influence the distribution of electrons and may be used to vary the emission from the wires h. The cross-section of the casing h is oval or circular according as two or more than two wires n are used. The casing h may be thick to provide protection from X-rays.
