Abstract
536,941. R÷ntgen-ray tubes. ALLIBONE, T. E., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 2, 1939, No. 29247. [Class 39 (i)] The target 1 of a high voltage X-ray tube is cylindrical or spherical and an electromagnet 10 is provided so that the cathode ray from the tube 6 may be deflected on to different parts of the target surface to enable the rays to be used at different angles. The tube is enclosed in a shield 7, which may be of the kind described in Specification 438,147. The shield has a number of outlet passages or it is adjustable with only one passage 8 for the rays ; it has a slot 9 to accommodate (i) the tube 6 and (ii) a side extension 11 into which the cathode rays may be deflected when not required. The electromagnet is housed in the shield ; for a spherical tube the shield is cubical. The sides of the tube are closed by plates 2, and a water-cooling jacket 3 surrounds the target; this is of metal of high atomic number or is plated with such a metal the X-rays penetrate the target.
