988,025. Electron beam apparatus. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Jan. 21, 1963 [Jan. 30, 1962; Jan. 11, 1963], No. 2532/63. Heading H1D. A flat electron beam for irradiating materials is focused by at least one pair of permanent or electromagnets disposed on either side of the beam parallel to its major axis and with their polarities oppositely oriented. The edge effects of the magnetic fields produced may also have the effect of diverging the beam as shown. The electron gun comprises a cathode filament, a pair of reflector electrodes diverging away from the filament, pairs of rod-shaped focusing electrodes at increasing positive potentials and a slotted accelerating electrode. In apparatus for irradiating material 120 in strip form, the electron beam emerges through a window structure D<SP>1</SP> which includes an upper block with a slide valve covering a slot, and a lower water-cooled block with a seating 86 for the window proper 84. The end and side walls of the beam chamber A consist of insulating material, e.g. " Araldite " (Registered Trade Mark), and the side walls are shielded by triangular electrodes 93 or, alternatively, by centrally slotted parallel plates distributed along the chamber. The pair of focusing magnets is indicated at 26<SP>1</SP>.
