Abstract
872,518. Irradiation apparatus. HIGH VOLTAGE ENGINEERING CORPORATION. Sept. 24, 1957 [Sept. 28, 1956; Oct. 8, 1956(2)], No. 37639/60. Divided out of 872,517. Class 98(1) [Also in Group XL(a)] A continuous length of material is irradiated with high energy electrons by producing a beam of electrons which is extended in at least one plane, producing two oppositely orientated magnetic fields in the path of the beam whereby the electrons are caused to converge towards an irradiation zone and passing the material through the zone. Preferably (and as illustrated) a scanning movement is imparted to the beam. Two types of apparatus are described : in the first (Figs. 1 and 2), the electron beam passes out of an accelerator 1 through tube 2 having a scanning device 5 and into two electron window assemblies 4<SP>1</SP>, 5' terminating in electron windows 6<SP>1</SP>, 7' which face opposite sides of a continuous length of material 6 to be irradiated. Two magnets 11<SP>1</SP> and 12<SP>1</SP> having poles 13<SP>1</SP>, 14 and 15, 16 respectively, direct the divided electron beam through the electron windows as substantially parallel but oppositely directed streams on to the material. In the second apparatus (Figs. 5 and 6) a similar electron beam emerging from a single window 7 is deflected by means of magnet poles 11a, 12a, 13a and 14a so as to irradiate each part of the circumference of a cable 6a substantially evenly. Specifications 539,790, 695,441, 695,539 and 721,235 also are referred to.
