Abstract

1430005 Discharge tubes NATIONAL AERONAUTICS & SPACE ADMINISTRATION 26 June 1973 [27 June 1972] 30296/73 Heading H1D The efficiency of collection of a spent electron beam in a microwave tube is increased by first radially expanding the beam from its value in the interaction region 10 of the tube, to decrease its current density e.g. to a value not exceeding 10 amps. cm.<SP>-2</SP>, by provision of a region 11 of smoothly decreasing magnetic field, and then maintaining the beam at a substantially constant diameter by a region 12 of uniform magnetic field of reduced intensity, and finally collecting the beam, in a region 19 of zero magnetic field, on a sequence of plates 34 to 37 of progressively more negative potential. The distance L over which beam expansion occurs should be in the range one to three cyclotron wavelengths in terms of the region 10 field, and the distance L 2 over which the beam radius is maintained constant should be a half to one cyclotron wavelengths, in terms of the region 12 field. The field in region 12 may be “ to <SP>1</SP>/ 10 th the value in region 10. The fields may be produced by solenoids, as shown, or by permanent magnets, or a periodic permanent magnet system. Reference is made to the possibility of using a single magnet with polepieces 25, 28, and 29 to produce the required field variation.
