Abstract
1403172 Velocity-modulated tubes VARIAN ASSOCIATES 19 March 1973 [20 March 1972] 13072/73 Heading H1D A miniturized microwave beam tube, e.g. a travelling-wave tube or klystron, for operation at a frequency above 4 GHz, includes an electron gun providing a beam of a microperveance within the range of 0À8 to 2À2, and a periodic permanent magnet focussing system which includes axially polarized annular magnets having a coercive force in excess of 2000 oersteds, and which produces a focussing field within the beam path of an intensity in excess of 2000 gauss. As described, the envelope of a travelling-wave tube if formed by a brazed sequence of annular iron pole plates 11 and non- magnetic spacers 13, the annular magnets 9 being formed as two half rings to facilitate assembly, and being composed of a rare earth/ cobalt material where the rare earth may be Y, Sc, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Eb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb or Lu. The gun has a cathode-preferably of dispenser type-with at part-spherical concave surface, and a modulating anode (16, Fig. 7, not shown). The tube may have an overall size of 0À35 by 0À75 by 5À0 inch. Many numerical data are provided.
