Abstract
1,177,947. Travelling-wave tubes. NIPPON ELECTRIC Co. Ltd. 19 Oct., 1966 [19 Oct., 1965], No. 46733/66. Heading H1D. A travelling-wave tube with periodic magnetic focusing is provided, adjacent the entrance to the collector, with a structure which includes a magnet providing a magnetic field which is asymmetric with respect to the tube axis, whereby secondary electrons emitted from the collector are prevented by deflection from reaching the slow-wave structure. In a tube having a periodic permanent magnet focusing system composed of magnets 12 separated by polepieces 13, and a collector 10 having an extension 9 projecting towards the focusing system, the final magnet 15 either has a portion cut off by a plane parallel to the tube axis (Fig. 2, not shown) or is provided with a magnetic shunt, either on its outer (Fig. 4, not shown) or inner (Fig. 6, not shown) surface and extending between its bounding polepieces but only partly around its periphery. The shunt may be of material compensating for the change of the magnetic properties of the magnet with temperature, and temperature compensating shunts may also be incorporated in the periodic focusing structure. In further embodiments (Figs. 7 to 10, not shown), an annular, semi-cylindrical, or horseshoe magnet, magnetized transversely to the tube axis, or one or more bar magnets arranged radially with respect to the axis, are disposed around the collector projection 9, and are separated from the periodic focusing system by a non-magnetic member. The output coupling from the tube includes an antenna 6, choke 7, and waveguide 14.
