Abstract

865,725. Travelling wave tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 9, 1958 [July 11, 1957], No. 22033/58. Class 39(1). A travelling wave tube has a 'uniform field' magnetic focusing system comprising two apertured polygonal soft iron pole pieces 3, Fig. 4, to each of which is attached a main set of radially arranged permanent magnet rods 1 the rods of one main set being radially magnetised in the opposite radial direction to the rods of the other main set the outer ends of the rods being connected by soft iron rod members 4 and an additional set 5 (2 sets shown) of radially arranged and radially magnetised permanent magnet steel rods adjacent one of the two main sets the outer ends of the rods of the additional set being disposed against the soft iron members 4 and the inner ends being free the field strength and direction of magnetisation of the rods of the additional set being such as to inhibit along at least part of the system variations in the strength of the axial magnetic field. To make the field larger at the output end of the travelling wave tube the main magnets at that end are made slightly longer and thicker than those at the input end, Fig. 5 (not shown). A pile of hard paper and mumetal rings 6, 7 may form a composite tube serving approximately the function of a flux guide. The input and output waveguides extend between the composite tube and the pole pieces.
