783,603. Magnets; magnetic structures. MULLARD RADIO VALVE CO., Ltd. Feb. 22, 1954 [May 19, 1953], No. 14028/53. Classes 35 and 38 (2). [Also in Group XL (a)] A magnet arrangement suitable for use with an electron-discharge tube using orthogonal scanning such as a television camera consists of a plurality of annular permanent magnets 10 arranged coaxially and axially spaced from one another by non-magnetic spacing means 11, each magnet being magnetized parallel to its axis and all magnets being disposed with like poles facing the same direction to produce a unidirectional generally axial regular field over a length large compared with the axial dimension of any magnet. By regular is meant a field whose value either changes linearly with axial distance between the ends of the arrangement, or is uniform in the axial direction; the latter may be provided as shown by having all the magnets of similar dimensions but disposed axially closer to each other at the centre than at the ends of the arrangement, or, not shown, by using axially equispaced magnets whose axial lengths and/or external diameters are greater at the centre than at the ends. The arrangement also provides within limits a uniform radial field, and the magnets may be of the material described in Specification 708,127. Specification 576,369 also is referred to.
