Abstract
885,251. Permanent magnets. MULLARD Ltd. May 13, 1958, No. 15305/58. Class 35. [Also in Group XL (a)] A permanent magnet system for focusing a beam of charged particles eg. in a klystron or travelling-wave tube, comprises a series of magnets 1 coaxial with the common longitudinal axis of the system, associated with a series of apertured pole pieces the aperture boundaries of which are surfaces of revolution about the common axis and the parts being so shaped and arranged that a substantially uniform flux is established along the common axis, the direction of this flux being reversed in adjacent regions (Fig. 3, not shown) and the magnets being secured in position by supports which provide an external flux path. The magnets are cylindrical or frusto-conical shells, the inner pole pieces 2 being apertured discs, and the outer pole pieces 3 each having an inner coaxial cylindrical extension and a peripheral extension 5 carrying clamping bolts 6 which complete the outer magnetic circuit. The three adjacent axial air gaps 8, 9 and 10 thus formed are dimensioned to provide a uniform field. A coil 7, which may be in sections, may be provided for fine adjustment of flux.
