Abstract

890,843. Travelling-wave tubes STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. (Nippon Electric Co. Ltd.) Feb. 18, 1959, No. 5559/59. Class 39(1) A periodic magnetic focusing system A, Fig. 1, in the region of the waveguide feeder of a travelling-wave tube comprises two cylindrical magnets 1, 2 on either side of the feeder 3, pole-pieces 4, 5 having external projections for controlling the amount of magnetic flux passing through the two magnets in common, and polepieces 6, 7 for controlling the distribution of the magnetic field in the vicinity of the electron beam. The design of the system is described in detail and is such that the magnetic field intensity on the axis of the beam conforms with the fields produced by the main periodic focusing system B: In modifications supplemental magnets may be provided between pole-pieces 6 and 7 to provide aiding flux or a magnetic shunting circuit comprising iron spokes 10, 11, Fig. 3, and iron bars 14 may be attached to the magnets 1 and 2. The support rings 12 and 13 may be of magnetic or non-magnetic material.
