Abstract
929,793. Travelling wave tubes. NIPPON ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 8, 1960 [Jan. 14, 1959], No. 768/60. Class 39 (1). An electron beam periodic magnetic focusing arrangement comprises a set of annular permanent magnets 2, 3, Fig. 1B, positioned adjacent one another along a common axis to provide an axial magnetic field of constant period and peak flux density, a hollow metal member 1 of non- magnetic material providing means for radio frequency coupling to the beam positioned between a pair of the magnets 2, 3, the pair of magnets 2, 3 being similar to one another and arranged with unlike poles adjacent one another; an inner pair of annular polepieces 7, 8 positioned one on each side of the hollow metal member 1 between it and the adjacent pair of magnets 2, 3, an outer pair of annular polepieces 4, 5 and at least one flux shunting strip 6 of soft magnetic material bridging across the hollow metal member 1 between the members of the outer pair of polepieces, each member of the two pairs of polepieces 4, 7, 8, 5 having an external diameter less than that of the pair of magnets 2, 3; the arrangement being such that there is provided along the axis between the inner pair of polepieces 7, 8 and between each of the pair of inner polepieces 7, 8 and the adjacent one of the pair of outer polepieces 4, 5 respective half-periods of the said axial magnetic field. The magnets 2, 3 are larger than those surrounding the delay line of the travelling wave tube, and 1 is a coupling waveguide. The shorting strip 6 is saturated to minimize the external leakage flux.
