Abstract
548,673. Rontgen-ray tubes. WOOD, W: A., and FROMMER, L. June 13, 1941, No. 7482; [Class. 39 (i)] In an X-ray tube particularly for. use in radiography and crystallography a large area target is used to give a converging, conical emission of rays the solid angle of the cone being 30 degrees or more. A filamentary cathode 12, Fig. 1, is supported at one end' by a steel. rod 14 encased in, quartz and at the other end by a tube 13 through which the upper end of the rod passes, with a vacuum tight seal: The target 5 is a copper block with cooling water circulation holes made therein. The window is formed by a thin aluminium plate 10; Fig. 3, held' in a recess by a steel plate 8 with hole 9. The whole of the cylindrical surface 5a of the block is used as a target and secondary X-rays generated in the block form part of the emission. A glass cylinder 2 forms an extension of the block, the top of the cylinder 2 being closed by a further cylinder which is water cooled. In a modification the target is formed by the cylinder 20, Fig. 4, removably: carried in an extension 19 connected to a pump. Thetop of the extension is closed by a glass cylinder 2, the seal 16 being cooled by the water in the jacket 23a; an independent cooling jacket 32 is placed on the' target. In this form the window 10 is arranged at the end of the target block. The filament may be wound round a ceramic support or an indirectly heated cathode may be used. The target may be spherical with the cathode at the centre. The block may be of any material which it is desired to examine or may be coated with such material' such as zinc, gallium or the alkali metals.
