Abstract

Acid sulphuric esters of hydroaromatic, aliphatic-aromatic or heterocyclic alcohols or salts thereof are added to mercerizing liquors to improve their wetting properties. Organic solvents and dispersing agents such as phenols or sulphonated higher fatty acids stable to alkali may also be present. Cyclohexanol, terpineol, borneol, menthol, benzylalcohol, furfuryl alcohol, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, hydrogenated phenols derived from low temperature tar or vertical retort tar and naphthene alcohols may be sulphonated with oleum, chlorsulphonic acid or an addition product of tertiary base and sulphur trioxide in order to prepare the wetting agents. The organic solvents specified include ethyl, amyl and benzyl alcohols, cyclohexanol, methylcyclohexanol, terpineol, menthol, pine oil, furfuryl alcohol, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, diacetone alcohol, glycol monobutylether, diethylene glycolmonobutylether and glycerinemono butylether. As dispersing agents are mentioned halogenated phenols, e.g. chlor cresol and castor oil sulphonated in the presence of sulphophthalic acid anhydride. In examples, sodium methylcyclohexylsulphate, mixed with crude cresol or the sulphonated oil prepared according to example 1 of Specification 363,770 is added to a mercerizing lye.
