Retting.-In the retting of flax and other fibres by fermentation certain wetting-out or dispersing agents, viz. :-the sulphonic acids derived from formaldehyde - naphthalene or formaldehydephenol condensation products, the alkyl-naphthalene sulphonic acids, the substances prepared by sulphonating mineral oil fractions and condensing the products with isopropyl alcohol, lignin sulphonic acids, naphthenic acids, taurocholic acid, and sulphonated higher fatty acids, are added to the retting bath or to the preliminary, soaking bath, preferably as neutral sodium salt, to give a concentration of 0.5 to 2.0 per cent.
