Abstract
The wetting properties of mercerizing lyes are improved by the addition of alkali salts of carboxylic acids having the formula: H(CH2)m X(CH2)nCOOH in which X is O, S, NH or N-alkyl and m and n are whole numbers but m+n is at least 3 and not more than 9. Phenols, solvents or highly sulphonated oils may also be added to the lyes. In examples: (1) sodium butyloxyacetate and a sulphonated oil obtained by treating oleic acid with oleum in the presence of carbon tetrachloride are added to a mercerizing lye: (2) a mixture of sodium diisobutylaminoacetate, phenol and xylenol is similarly employed. Glycol ethers may be used as solvents. The acids having the above formula may be made by reacting, for example, chloracetic, chlorpropionic or chlorbutyric acid esters with appropriate second components such as butylmercaptan, butylamine or methylbutylamine and saponifying the products.
