[Class 146 (i)] A card-index tray or drawer is provided with counting-mechanism actuated by index cards by means of a two-way ratchet mechanism so as to be moved one unit forwards each time a card is inserted and one unit backwards each time a card is taken out. Two narrow strips 13, 14, Fig. 3, are pivoted longitudinally of the drawer and are normally maintained in horizontal position by springs, but are raised or lowered by the upper or lower edges of a recess 20 in an index card 23 when the card is removed from or placed in the drawer. The edges of the recess may be protected by metal reinforcements. The ends of the strips 13, 14, which are geared together so as to move symmetrically, lie between arms 9, 10, Fig. 1, on pivoted ribs 7, 8 carrying pawls 5, 6. The pawls 5, 6 operate a counter 2 in one direction or the other. Division cards 24, of sheet metal or the like, are provided with large recesses in the lower edge so that they will not actuate the counters, and with bentover lugs 26 which engage in slots 27 in the bottom of the drawer so that the division and index cards cannot move too far from the vertical and operate the counter accidentally.
