[Class 146 (i)] In a vertical card-index in which the cards f, Fig. 1, of a group are held in a staggered transverse relationship by the engagement of a fixed rod d with recesses m in the bottom edges of the cards, the top corners of the cards are removed to provide known inclined visible index strips g, and the bottom edge of each card is provided only upon its middle portion with rod-engaging recesses so that the tongues between the recesses may be protected by unbroken edges from contact with the bottom of the box. The index cards f, arranged in groups of, say, ten, are supplied un-notched, but carrying a printed scale n, so that the user can notch the cards with a punch according to their desired position in the group, and can add further notches if the position is to be changed. Between the card groups are flexible guide cards h, and also separator cards k, which are provided with metal or wood spacing strips p, of the same thickness as the card groups. To prevent the guide and separator cards engaging under and lifting the index cards when they are tilted, pins a on the spacing strips engage in grooves or slots r in the side walls of the card box a. In a modification, the index cards may have the median notch bearing portion of the lower edge cut back at o, Fig. 5, further to protect the notches and tongues, or may be supplied already notched. The pins g may be arranged to engage slots in the bottom of the box, which is lined at c with soft rubber.
