[Class 16] A device for classifying correspondence &c. comprises a set of sheets or cards detachably bound along one edge in book form and treated so as to form tabs or to interlock with tabs on all four edges of the sheets, the correspondence being placed in the device below the appropriately-tabbed sheet. Sets of sheets may be separated by tabbed record sheets 10. In one form, Fig. 1, each sheet 1 is originally formed with a complete series of index tabs along its four edges. As shown, the tabs 7 on the right-hand edge 3 are cut off leaving only the two corresponding to the first two letters of the matter which is to be placed under that sheet. The tabs 8 on the lower edge 4 may be cut away to leave the one denoting the third letter. Similarly the tabs 6, 9 on the other edges 2, 5 are cut away to leave tabs corresponding for example to the fourth and fifth letters. Alternatively, tabs on the various edges may be used to denote other features such as locality or the type of business. The tabs can be perforated along the edge of the sheet to facilitate their removal. Both the tabs and the adjacent edge of the sheet may be marked with the index references. In another form, Fig. 7, slots are provided adjacent to the four edges of each sheet to receive detachable tabs. At the top edge are two rows of slots 70, 71 and each tab is threaded through two slots, one in each row. The projecting parts 68 of the tabs are inclined obliquely to the sheet edge and in the same direction. At the bottom edge, the tabs are straight and the slots inclined to effect the inclined arrangement of the tabs. At the right-hand edge, alternate pairs of slots are staggered so as to obtain a staggered arrangement of the tabs. These have tongues 72, 72a engaging the slots. Each pair of slots in this arrangement may be spaced from the adjacent pair lengthwise of the sheet or there may be no spacing between them. The reference markings on the sheet may be inclined at 45 degrees to the sheet edge to facilitate reading. Further, the tabs may be of celluloid so that such markings if covered are still visible. Differently coloured tabs may be employed if additional sub-indexing is required. Several forms of tabs are described, those in Fig. 6 being formed by stamping out tongues 30 from the sheet and pushing them through slots 31. The tabs used with slots perpendicular to the sheet edge may have similarlyspaced slots (87, Fig. 12 not shown) in their sheetengaging parts so that intermediate tabs may be placed in position.
