[Classes 16 and 146 (i)] In an index system comprising a number of rows of similar cards or leaves 2 notched to co-operate with parallel spacing-members in the bottom of a container 1 so that the cards of each row are arranged in overlapping formation with one margin 5 of each card uncovered, each card is provided at its upper edge with a rectangular tab 6 which is of greater length than the width of the uncovered card margin and carries the index marking 7 ; a series of overlapping rows of tabs is thus formed wherein all the exposed parts of the tabs are simultaneously visible when viewed from above in a downwardly inclined direction. Vertical lines 4 on the cards assist in assembling the cards in the correct overlapping relationship. Arrows 8 on the normally covered parts of the tabs are exposed to view when cards are withdrawn. Between each row of cards a spacer strip of thick cardboard may be inserted, such strips being of the same length as the container 1 and the same width as the cards proper so that it does not cover the tabs. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the cards need not be notched at their outer edges, the bottom of the container being roughened to prevent shifting of the cards. Further, the tab arrangements may be used on a loose-leaf dictionary assembled in, for example, a ring binder, each tab bearing the initial letter or letters of the first word on its associated page. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
