4 Claims. (Cl. 116-119) The present invention relates to book marks of the type having tabs bendable away from a main sheet and a top or side portion which extends above the pages of a book when the sheet is inserted between adjacent pages of a book and the tab inserted between other pages.
The present invention -has for its principal object to provide the new and novel type of book mark which can be used to mark as many =as three places in a book.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a new and novel book mark having a side portion which will extend exteriorly of the pages of the book when the tabs are separated from the sheet and inserted between adjacent pages of the book, and one which provides space for advertising, slogans, identifying legends, marginal notes, illustrations, or other indicium upon the sheet and upon the side portion of the sheet.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a book mark consisting of a sheet having bendable tabs separated from the sheet by slots, with one of the tabs connected by a line of perforations so that the tab can be formed to a greater length as desired.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings in which:
Figure l is a view in perspective of a book with the present invention inserted between some of the pages of the book,
Figure 2 is a top View as seen on line 2--2 of Figure l,
Figure 3 is an end view in cross section on line 3 3 of Figure l, and
Figure 4 is a view in perspective of the formed shape before the tabs are bent outwardly therefrom.
Referring in greater detail to the drawing in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views a book is represented by the reference numeral and having a plurality of pages 11. The book mark of the present invention is formed from a sheet 12 having a side edge 13 and opposed end edges 14 and 15, respectively.
Adjacent each of the end edges 14 and 15 is an L- shaped slot having short legs 16 and 17, respectively, and long legs 18 and 19, respectively. The legs 16 and 17 extend inwardly from the associated end edge and are connected to one end of the associated ' long legs 18 or 19 which extend substantially parallel to the associated end edge 14 or 15, with the terminating ends of each of the long legs spaced from the side edge 13.
The terminating end of the leg 19 is connected to the one end of a third slot 20 which exten-ds across the sheet parallel to and spaced from the side edge 13. A line of perforations 21 connects by one end to the slot 20 and terminates adjacent to the other end of the long leg 18.
It will be seen that portions of the sheet separated by the slot formed by the legs 16 and 18 dene a first bendable tab 22, and the portion of the sheet separated by the slots having the legs 17 and 19 define a second bendable tab 23.
a ICC The tab 2.3i has a short leg portion 24 and a second andv long leg portion 25 which may be made longer by breaking the sheet along the perforated line 21.
A feature of the present invention is that the tabs 22 and 23= formed bythe slots 16 to 21 are at eachy end of the sheet and when inserted between adjacent pages of a book, will not ovenlie the printed matter upon the pages. Having two tabs, the sheet itself can be inserted anywhere within the book between adjacent pages andthe one -tab 22 may be used to separate or indicate selected pages' in the book while the tab 23 may be used to indicate other pages, possibility those being currently read.
It will be seen that the present invention i-s of especial use having an appendix section which must be referred to for explanation, interpretation or possibly translation of the text of the book. The side portion and the sheet of the present invention are adaptable for the use of advertisers, and provide space upon which advertising material may be printed or they may be used for slogans, legends, or the like. Another possible use of the sheet with its side portion is for the taking of notes by students, teachers and others having a professional use of the book.
While a single embodiment of the present invention has been here illustrated and described, it is believed that other embodiments may be made and practiced within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
l. A book mark comprising a sheet having opposed end edges and a side edge connecting said end edges together, there being an L-shaped slot adjacent each end thereof, each slot having the short leg extending perpendicularly inwardly from the associated end edge with the long leg substantially parallel to said associated end edge with the terminating end of said long leg spaced from said side edge, the portion of said sheet separated by each of said slots delining a bendable tab, said tabs being adapted to be inserted between adjacent pages of a book with the portion of said sheet along said one side edge and above the long legs of said slots surmounting said adjacent pages.
2. A book mark comprising a sheet having opposed end edges and a side edge connecting said end edges together, there being an L-shaped slot adjacent each end thereof, each slot having the short leg extending perpendicularly inwardly from 'the associated end edge with the long leg substantially parallel to said associated end edge with the terminating end of said long leg spaced from said side edge, the portion of said sheet separated by one of said slots defining a first bendable tab adapted to be inserted between adjacent pages of a book, another portion of said sheet separated by the other of said slots delining a second bendable tab adapted to be inserted between other adjacent pages of the book with the portion of said sheet along said side edge and above the long legs of said slots surmounting said pages between said tabs.
3. A book mark comprising a sheet having opposed end edges and -a side edge connecting said end edges together, there being an L-shaped slot adjacent each end thereof, each slot having the short leg extending perpendicularly inwardly from the associated end edge with the long leg substantially parallel to said associated end edge with the terminating end of said long leg spaced from said side edge, the portion of said sheet separated by one of said slots defining a first bendable tab adapted to be inserted between adjacent pages of a book, said sheet being formed with a third slot extending parallel to and spaced from said one side edge and being connected by one end to the terminating end of the long leg of the other L-shaped slot, said other L-shaped slot and said third slot defining an L-shaped tab having a short leg portion parallel to the associated end edge and a long leg portion parallel to said one side edge, said L-shaped tab being adapted to 'have its short leg portion inserted between other pages of said book with the long leg 4portion surmounting said pages between said tabs.
4. A book mark comprising a sheet having opposed end edges and a side edge connecting said end edges together, there being an L-shaped slot adjacent each end thereof, each slot having the short leg extending perpendicularly inwardly from the associated end edge with the long leg substantially parallel to said associated end edge with the terminating end of said long leg spaced from said side edge, the portion of said sheet separated by one of said slots defining a rst bendable tab adapted to be inserted between adjacent pages of a book, said sheet being formed with a third slot extending parallel to and spaced from said oneside edge and being connected by one end to the terminaiting end of the long leg of the other L-shaped slot, said other L-shaped slot and said third slot dening an L-shaped tab having a short leg portion parallel to the associated end edge and a long leg portion parallel to said one side edge, said L-shaped tab being adapted to have its short leg portion inserted between other pages of said book with the long leg portion surmounting said pages between said tabs, said sheet being formed with perforations along which said sheet may be separated to add to the length of the longer leg portion of said L-shaped tab thus defined.
