Application March I, 1935, Serial No. 9,124 6 Claims. 01. 281-42) This invention relates to improvements in the mechanical construction of books, magazines, pamphlets and the like, and, more especially, to the provision of a place-marker or bookmark which forms a part of the book.

It not infrequently happens when using the ordinary place-marker that it becomes separated from the book, or transferred to some other book, so that when the reader, at a later time, wishes to turn quickly to the desired page, he is unable to do so. One of the objects of the present invention is, accordingly, to provide a place-marker which cannot become separated from the hook in which it is used, and which, moreover, can be provided without materially increasing the cost of the book. 7

Bookmarkers have heretofore been proposed which form a part of a book cover of the type used for the protection of books against being soiled by the hands of the reader. These bookmarkers, however, were formed as a projection extending from the edge of one or both of the leaves or sheets constituting the book cover. Book or place-markers constructed in this way, however, have the disadvantage of substantially increasing the cost of the article. Such marker portions projecting from the edges of the book cover were made in two ways: (1) by forming them integrally with the edge of the leaf; (2) by making the marker separately and attaching it to the edge of the leaf by the use of paste, for example. Either method of manufacture, however, is comparatively expensive, the first because of the necessity of complicated punches and dies, and because of wastage of stock in punching, and the second because of the labor required in attaching the marker.

In accordance with my present invention, however, the difiiculties with such constructions are overcome, and a book or place-marker is provided at an insignificant increase in the cost of the book to which it is applied. The marker may be formed as a part of one of the cover leaves, fiy leaves or interior leaves of the book or as a part of the jacket (usually of paper), such as is vcommonly furnished to protect, more or less temporarily, the cover leaves of books, or it may be formed as a part of those book covers which are manufactured separately from the book itself and applied thereto to serve as a more or less permanent protection for the book. I

Another object of my invention is to provide a place-marker which is peculiar to the book with which it is used. It is frequently desirable to bring into prominence the author or the publisher of a book or to emphasize some characteristic of the book such, for example, as a peculiarity of a character in the book or the general subject matter to which the book relates. This may be accomplished not only by means of matter appearing on 'the bookmarker but by giving the bookmarker a configuration appropriate to the matter desired to be emphasized.

A further consideration in the manufacture of books, magazines, pamphlets and the like, and, 10 perhaps, particularly important in connection with magazines and periodicals, is the advertising value of the cover leaf space and the space on the leaves adjacent the cover leaves, and the present invention also aims to provide a placemarker which is so associated with one or more of the leaves of the book, particularly the outside cover sheets or leaves and the pages adjacent thereto, as to enhance the advertising value of the space on such pages. 2

The nature of the invention is set forth in the following description and-accompanying drawing which shows several forms in which theinvention can be embodied, but it is to be understood that the disclosure is illustrative only, and that the details of construction may be changed without departing from the principles of the invention or exceeding the scope and meaning of the terms of the appended claims.

Fig. 3 shows a cross section of the book with the bookmarker folded over the top edge of a 0 portion of the book and with the outer end and body of the marker inserted between the leaves to which it is desired to reopen the book at a later time.

Fig. 4 is a view of a modification in which the Z marker is given the configuration of an object desired to be emphasized, a bottle in this case, and as shown, the marker will fold over the bottomedge of the book instead of the top edge as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3; and r 00 Fig. 5 is a plan view similar to Fig. 1 except that the marker is disposed along the width of the cover instead of the length of the cover as in the previous figures.

Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the book shown in Fig. 5 with the bookmarker folded over the side edge of a portion of the book and with the outer end of the marker in position so that when the book is closed, the marker will be located between the leaves to which it is desired to reopen the book at a later time.

Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 to 3, the cover 10 of a book, magazine or the like is cut, perforated or scored along the lines H, to provide a flap I! which may be lifted from the body of the leaf and used as a marker. Where the cover or leaf is scored or perforated, it is necessary to sever the flap along the lines of the scoring or perforation. As shown in Fig. 1, the flap i2 has been partially severed from the cover it along one end and the two sides of the 1311p l2 leaving one end of the flap I! attached to the cover.

To use the flap as a bookmarker, the flap I2 is folded upwardly as shown in Fig. 2 and then folded over the top edge of a portion of the book and the free end of the flap I2 is inserted as shown in Fig. 3, between the leaves to which it is desired to reopen the book at a later time. It will be observed that when the flap I2 is raised from the body of the cover l0 a window I4 is provided in the cover I0 through which matter on the adjoining page is exposed. This feature may be used in a variety of ways, e. g., for advertising purposes. Likewise the flap I2 may bear suitable advertising matter.

In Fig. 4 the flap I2 is given a distinctive outline, in this case the shape of a bottle, and the outline is formed by scoring or perforations ll.

In this figure the flap is shown so disposed that when severed along the scoring or perforations if it can be folded over the bottom edge of the book or magazine instead of over the top edge as in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.

' In Fig. 5 the flap I 2 is shown outlined on the cover ID by perforations II. In this instance the flap is shown disposed along the width of the page instead of the length of the page as in the previous figures. When the flap has been severed from the cover or page along the lines of perforation shown, it may be used as a bookmarker by folding the flap around the side edge of a portion of the book and the free end of the flap inserted between the pages to which it is desired to reopen the book at a later time. This isshown in perspective in Fig. 6.

The bookmarker of the present invention may be provided at practically no increased cost in the manufacture of the book inasmuch as the scoring, perforating or cutting operation may be performed at the same time as the printing operation merely by providing the printing plate for the bookmarker page with suitable means to cut, score or perforate the flap.

The invention has been particularly described in connection with the outside cover or Jacket of a book or magazine but the marker may also be formed as a part of one of the fly leaves or interior leaves of the book and may be applied to all kinds of books in which a bookmarker is desirable, such as notebooks, diaries and the like,

as well as to magazines, pamphlets, newspapers and the like.

In the accompanying claims the word "book", in addition to its ordinary meaning, is intended to include magazines, booklets, pamphlets, circulars, newspapers and the like and the word "leaf" is used to comprehend any pages of a book including the fly leaf and cover as well as part of a jacket or other protective coveringfor a book.

I claim:

1. A book having a leaf thereof provided with a portion separable in part from the body thereof, said portion being adapted to be'folded along the non-separable part of said portion from the plane of the leaf and around one of the edges of the leaf but attached at one end to said leaf and foldable at that end from the plane of the leaf and around one of the edges thereof' to form a flapor tab which is insertable between the leaves of the book to serve as a place marker.

3. A book having a leaf thereof provided with a portion severable along three sides from the leaf and adapted to be folded along its fourth side out of theplane of the leaf and around an edge thereof to form a flap or tab insertable between the leaves of the book to serve as a place marker.

4. A book having a leaf thereof provided with a central portion separable in part from the body thereof, said portion being adapted to be folded along the non-separable part of said portion from the plane of the leaf and around one of the edges of the leaf to form a flap or tab which is insertable between the leaves of the book to serve as a place marker, and, when so used, creating a window through which matter on adjoining pages is exposed.

6. A book having aleaf thereof provided with an elongated marking portion, which at one side is integral with the main portion of the leaf and which at its other sides is separated from the main portion of the leaf, the length of said marking portion, fromthe side at which it is attached to the main portion of the leaf being greater than the distance between the line of attachment to the main portion of the leaf and the edge of the book in the direction opposite to that in which the marking portion extends, plus the thickness of the book, whereby said portion may be bent around said edge of the book and inserted between any of the leaves thereof.
