Description

Nov. 3, 1942. c. PL HORNUNG 2,300,623
INDEX Filed May 23, 1941 M] INVENTOR CLARENCE P. HOENUNG ATTORN EY Patented Nov. 3, 1942 2,300,623 INDEX Clarence P. Hornung, Hempstead, N. Y., assignor of one-half to Leo H. Joachim, county of New York, N. Y.
Application May 23, 1941, Serial No. 3%,747
4 Claims.
This invent-ion relates generally to indexes and more particularly to the class employable with or as a folder, book, index card, letter file or index file. I
It is an object of the present invention to provide economical, efiicient and practical index means formed out of the body of the sheet carrying the same and readily securable to said bod in operable position.
t is a further object of the present invention to provide a sheet with a substantially U-shaped cut adjacent an edge thereof to form a tongue foldable on a line connecting the ends of the cut, the tongue when folded forming a tab having a portion protruding beyond the said edge, and with at least one cut in said sheet at said edge forming oppositely bendable portions, one of the portions having overlapping engagement with the tab to lock the same in folded position.-
It is yet another object of the present invention to provide a sheet with a substantially U- shaped cut adjacent an edge thereof forming a tongue foldable on a line connecting the ends of the out against the underface of the sheet thus providing a tab having a portion protruding beyond the mentioned edge at said underface, the said tab being securable against said underface in operable position.
These and other objects of the invention will appear from the following disclosures thereof together with the attached drawing which illustrates preferred forms of embodiment thereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary View of a sheet provided with cuts to form a tongue in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the tongue folded to form a tab;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing an alternate form of the invention;
Fig. 4 is an edge View of Figure 2 drawn to an enlarged scale;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detailed form of the sheet showing still another form of the invention;
Fig. 6 illustrates the invention as applied to a sheet to form an index card;
Fig. 7 is an end formed of a folder having the invention applied thereto;
Fig. 8 is a front view of a book with the cover partly broken away, illustrating the application of the invention to form index tabs for said book.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 4 there is shown a sheet I0 which may represent a portion of a book, folder or letter file or an index card. Sheet ID has a substantially U-shaped cut ll formed 55 invention the tongue I3 is struck out of the body adjacent the edge 82 thereof providing a tongue 1 l3 foldable on the line Hi connectingthe ends l5, iii of the out ll. Tongue l3 when folded over the underface of sheet it) forms a tab I! having a portion I 8 projecting beyond edge l2. Tab I1 is shown as having an arcuate-shaped edge l9. a
At edge I2 of sheet [9 there are formed inwardly directed cuts 20, 2! having offset portions 22, 23, respectively. The portions 24, 25 of thesev cuts are alined with the cuts 25,2! of the-U-= shaped out II. The cuts 20, 21 form oppositely bendable portions 28, 29 and 30, 3| "have overlapping engagement with tab H at its underface locking the latter in folded position as clearly, seen in Fig. 2. Portions 29, 3t and the part of sheet I!) therebetween overlap theadjacent portion of tab H at the top face 32 of sheet 10.
In Fig. 3 which shows an alternate form of the invention, the tongue or tab M) has a pair ofears 4| and the cuts 42 inwardly directed from edge 43 are straight. Ears 4| and portions of sheet 44 at cuts 42 adjacent thereto are in overlapping engagement thus locking the tab 49 in folded position.
The hinge line connecting the tongue to the .1
sheet proper and about which the tongue is folded to form the extended tab, may be reinforced as shown in Fig. 5, in which, for example, the numeral 45 indicates a metallic deposit on one of.
plied to a book 51, the tabs being indicated by the numeral 58.
It is understood that the forms of the invention as disclosed in Fig. 3 may be applied to the devices shown in Figs. 6, '7 and 3.
Any suitable indicia may be carried by the tabs for indexing, sectioning, separating, etc. subjects matter.
To facilitate maintaining the tab in folded condition against the sheet, spot gluing (not shown) may be employed between the tab and sheet. It will be found, however, that the locking means shown in the drawing are effective for the purpose.
It can be seen that in one embodiment of the of the sheet adjacent the edge [2, the tongue being foldable along the line [4 parallel to edge I2, this line being at such distance from edge [2 which is less than the length of the tongue whereby to form when folded a tab having a portion protruding beyond edge l2; and that the means for securing the tab adjacent the body of the sheet comprises a pair of spaced cuts 28, 2| in the sheet at edge I2, a portion 24, 25 of the cuts being separated from each other a distance equal to the width of the tab and another portion 22, 23 of the cuts being separated from each other a distance less than the width of the tab.
Where indexes are employed particularly in books, it is customary that the index tabs or sheets be applied or inserted-after the book pages are trimmed. The index made in accordance with the present invention eliminates the necessity of applying the index tabs or sheets after the book is trimmed because of the fact that the tongue is made out of the material of the sheet and then folded to form the extended tab.
The foregoing disclosures are to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which embodiments may be constructed including modifications without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Le ters Patent, is:
1. In a sheet a substantially U-shaped cut made in said sheet adjacent an edge thereof to form a tongue foldable on a line connecting the ends of said out, said tongue when folded forming a tab having a portion protruding beyond the mentioned edge, and at least one out made in said sheet at said edge, said latter cut forming oppositely bendable portions, one of said portions having overlapping engagement with said tab to lock the same in folded position.
2. In a sheet a tongue struck out of the body of said sheet adjacent an edge thereof, said tongue being folded along a line parallel to said edge, said line being at such distance from the said edge which is less than the length of said tongue whereby to form when folded a tab having a portion protruding beyond said edge, and means for securing said tab adjacent said body, said means comprising at least one cut in said sheet at said edge, said out forming oppositely bendable portions, one of said portions having over- -lapping engagement with said tab to lock the same in folded position.
' 3. In a sheet a tongue struck out of the body of said sheet adjacent an edge thereof, said tongue being folded along a line parallel to said edge, said line being at such distance from the said edge which is less than the length of said tongue whereby to form when folded a tab having a portion protruding beyond said edge, and means for securing said tab adjacent said body, said means comprising a pair of spaced cuts in said sheet at said edge, a portion of each of said cuts being separated from each other a distance equal to the Width of said tab and another portion of each of said cuts being separated from each other by a distance less than the width of said tab.
4. In a sheet a tongue struck out of the body of said sheet adjacent an edge thereof, said tongue being folded along a line parallel to said edge, said line being at such distance from the said edge which is less'than the length of said tongue whereby to'form when folded a tab having a portion protruding beyond said edge, and means for securing said tab adjacent said body, said means comprising at least one, extension on said tab and at least one cut in said body'at said edge, said extension and the material of said body adjacent said out being in overlapping engagement when said tongue is folded along said line.
