Description

C. H. SMITH June 28, 1932.
PAD
Filed Nov. 27, 1931 ZW/Znj/MI INVENTOR Patented June 28, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CARLTON I-I. SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., .ASSIGNOR TO BUGGELN & SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK PAD Application filed November 27, 1931. Serial No. 577,406,
thereof form a gable-like structure that is held in position and is adapted to retain calendars, advertising matter, etc.
The invention will be understood from the description in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of the device; Fig. 2 is an end view of the same with the sheet of stiffened material folded; and Fig. 3 is a section along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing, reference character 1 indicates a pad of paper comprising a plurality of as many leaves as needed. A weakened line may be provided across each one of the leaves, as indicated at 2, by a series of perforations or in any other convenient manner,
so that the major portion of each leaf can be removed at will, leaving stubs, as is commonly done with pads of the sort. The leaves of the pad may be fastened to each other in any of the well-known ways, as by glue or staples.
A. sheet 3 of stiff material, such as thick paper, cardboard, naturalor artificialleather, stiffened cloth, etc., extends from the upper end of the pad downwardly to some distance.
This sheet may be bent or creased along predetermined lines. The material of which sheet 3 is made is of such character that calendars, receipts, advertising matter, etc., may
be printed directly thereon, or may be attached thereto by first being applied to labels which are stuck to the sheet or otherwise attached thereto. he sheet 3 may extend across the upper end of the pad 1, as shown at t, and thence along the back, as shown at 5, to form a back cover for the pad.
The sheet 3 is cut along lines near the upper end of the pad 1 to form an arrowshaped latch or extension 6, which can be bent up along the line 7 which forms a hinge for the latch 6. The latch 6 is pointed and has lateral projections 8 near the beginning of the pointed portion with shoulders parallel to the line 7.
A slot 9 is provided near the end of the sheet 3 to accommodate the latch 6'. The slot 9 is slightly shorter than the distance between the ends of the projections 8 so that the pointed end of the latch 6 can be passed through the slot 9, and the latch will be retained in this slot by the projections 8.
The front as well as the back portion of the sheet 3, may be attached to the pad 1 by means of staples 10 which pass through the upper ends of the sheets of the pad 1 and the front and back sides of the sheet 3.
The sheet 3 may be bent or folded back along the line 11 extending transversely across this sheet near the perforations 2. The sheet 3 may be creased or weakened along this line 11 to facilitate bending the sheet. The sheet 3 may also be bent or folded along the weakened lines 12, which extend transversely of this sheet from the edges thereof toward each other. The ends of the lines 12 are connected bya curved cut 13 so as to leave an extending tab let when the sheet 3 is bent along the lines 12.
The sheet 3 is cut to form the latch 6, slot 9 and tab 14 and is attached to the pad 1 in any convenient way, as, for example, by means of the staples 10, and the pad is shipped or mailed with the sheet 3 lying flat against the pad 1 on both sides.
lVhen the user wishes to use the pad, the lower edge of the front side of the sheet 3 is folded upwardly along the lines 11 and 12,
until the edge 15 contacts with the surface of the sheet 8 near the latch 6. The free end of the latch 6 is lifted slightly and caused to pass through the slot 9, whereupon the portions of the sheet 3 between the lines 11 and 12 and between the lines 12 and 15, respectively, form the sides of a gable-like structure, as shown most clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. The extending tab 14 lies in the plane of the front side of the gable or the side between the lines 11 and 12, and is convenient for grasping to move the pad. The sloping side of the gable-like structure that faces the user may be appropriately provided with Whatever insignia or advertising matter, etc., desired, as above indicated, and other portions of the sheet or cover 3 can also be used for the same purpose. The used sheets of the pad 1 can be removed in the usual Way Without disturbing the remainder of the device.
I claim:
1. In combination, a Writing pad and a sheet of relatively stiff material attached to said pad having portions folded into a gable form, and means integral with said sheet intermediate the ends thereof to prevent said gable from collapsing.
2. In combination, a Writing pad and a sheet of relatively stiff material attached to said pad having portions folded into a gable form With a tab at the top of the gable, and means integral with said sheet intermediate the ends thereof to prevent said gable from collapsing.
3. In combination, a Writing pad and a sheet of relatively stiff material attached to said pad having portions folded into a gable form, and a latch on said sheet intermediate its ends to hold one of the sides of said gable in place.
4. In combination, a Writing pad and a sheet of relatively stiff material attached to said pad having portions folded into a gable form, and means comprising a cut portion of said sheet of arrow-head shape for holding said gable in place.
5. In combination, a Writing pad and a sheet of relatively stiff material attached to said pad having portions folded into a gable form, and a latch on said sheet at an angle to said sheet for holding said gable.
6. In combination, a Writing pad and a sheet of relatively stifl material attached to said pad and passing across one edge and along two sides thereof, said sheet having portions folded into a gable form, and a latch on said sheet extending through a slot on one side of said gable.
7. In combination, a Writing pad and a sheet of relatively stiff material attached to said pad, said sheet having a latch formed therein and extending at an angle thereto.
8. In combination, a Writing pad and a sheet of relatively stiff material attached to said pad, said sheet having a latch, tab and slot formed therein, said latch extending into said slot and said tab extending at an angle to the main portion of said sheet.
9. A sheet of stiff material adapted to lie folded along certain lines and having means to maintain folds thereof in an upright position, said means comprising a latch formed of material of said sheet and extending at an angle to said sheet.
