[Class 16] Indexing.-A book or similar assembly of sheets 18 is provided on one edge with narrow index markings which become legible only when expanded by fanning out the book edge. In one form, Fig. 2, each group is indicated by a symbol 22 such as a triangular mark which may extend over the thickness of the group with its apex coincident with either the first or last of the leaves in the group. Adjacent to the symbol are markings 24 which may be alphabetical or numerical and which only become legible when the book edge is pressed back as shown to make an expanded surface. The markings may be partly on one side and partly on the other of the symbols, and both are arranged in diagonal lines from top to bottom of the book. To facilitate finding a particular page, a symbol and alphabetical marking 32 may be printed on the flat faces of the first sheet of each group in registration with the edge symbol, and also, the sheet preceding the endmost sheet of a group may have an arcuate cut away part 34 above the symbol on the next sheet to assist further the selection. Preferably, the groups comprise substantially the same number of sheets, and if desired, each sheet may have an index symbol formed by printing a mark on the flat face of the sheet which runs up to the edge thereof. The alphabetical markings may be formed by such printings on the flat face of the sheet or by printing on the indexing surface of the book when the latter is flexed. In another form, only the endmost sheet of each group is provided with a symbol. The indexing surface may be increased by making it of saw-toothed form or of arcuate shape.
