Abstract

Index divider cards (13), e.g. for a ring binder (11), are cut diagonally from a point (14,15) below an index mark to a point (15) on the adjacent or opposite edge. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Index divider cards The invention relates to index divider cards or sheets for use in books, ring binders, filing drawers or similar articles of stationery.
Usually such cards or sheets have the index margin either as a tab portion formed on one edge or as the outer portion of a stepped edge. Such cards or sheets are expensive to produce since they require some form of special guillotine and thus special equipment and additional handling.
The present invention provides a set, or partial set, of index divider cards or sheets for a book, ring binder or similar article of stationery in which each card or sheet has an index margin adjacent one edge thereof and is cut off in a diagonally straight line from point on said one edge to another point on the adjacent or opposite edge, the diagonal cuts being staggered so that the index margins have different lengths and in use any index marks can be seen together. An additional rectangular card or sheet may be provided to complete a set.
In one embodiment of the invention the said other point is substantially in the same position for all the sheets so that the diagonal cuts are at different angles fanning out from said other point.
In an alternative embodiment of the invention the angle of the diagonal cut is the same for all sheets.
This may facilitate the use of a single setting for guillotine guide.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings which shows a partial plan view of an open ring binder having a set of divider cards according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the ring binder 11 is of conventional construction having the usual snapaction rings 12 to secure suitably punched papers whilst allowing selective addition and removal.
A set of index cards 13 is shown fitted to the binder 11, the set comprising a partial set of eleven cards, index marked, as shown A two K in alphabetical order and a rectangular card, index marked L. The index markes are in an index margin adjacent the righthand edge of each card as shown in the drawing, which is the outer edge as installed in the ring binder. The card marked A has been cut in a diagonally straight line from a point 14 on the outer edge to a point 15 on the lower adjacent edge which is below the point 14 when considering the binder in its normal usage and applying conventional terminoligy.
The card marked B has been cut in a similar manner from a point 16 to a point which is in the same relative position as point 15, the index mark B and the cut 14-15 being arranged so that the mark B is visible below the mark A. The cards marked C to K are cut and marked similarly so that the marks and the cuts are staggered and enable all the marks of the set to be seen together. The diagonal cuts are at different angles fanning out from point 15. There is no need to cut the card marked L.
The cards are designed for separating sheets or batches of sheets of a width which is somewhat less than the width of the cards as indicated by the chain-dotted line 17.
The cards can be cut using a standard straight-cut guillotine in an operation which can be performed as part of the normal post-printing trimming operation, thus requiring no additional equipment or handling.
1. A set or partial set of index divider cards or sheets for a book, ring binder, filing drawer or similar article of stationery, each card or sheet having an index margin adjacent one edge thereof and being cut off in a diagonally straight line from one point on said one edge to another point on the adjacent or opposite edge, the diagonal cuts being staggered so that the index margins ar of different lengths and in use any index marks can be seen together.
2. A set or partial set as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said other point is substantially in the same position for all the sheets so that the diagonal cuts are at different angles fanning out from said other point.
3. A set or partial set as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the angle of the diagonal cut is the same for all sheets.
4. A set of index divider cards substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing.
