[Class 16.] A book, periodical, newspaper, or any arrangement of flexible sheets where more than two sheets are employed has one or more portions cut out in one or more edges of some or all of the sheets, these portions being arranged to form at least one or at least two series in such a manner that when the thumb is pulled over the edge where the portions are cut away the sheets will turn over in pairs or in sets of three or more. Sheet A of a book has a cutout portion or bay a at a position opposite the numeral 3 on page 3 of the next sheet B, and the bay b in the sheet B is adjacent to the bay a opposite the numeral 2 on page 2 of the sheet A. This arrangement is continued throughout the book so that the bays in the sheets A, C, E &c. are opposite to each other and form one series of bays, and the bays of sheets B, D &c. form another series of bays. Instead of page numbers being visible through the bays, there may be arranged other indications, such as titles and chapter or page numbers. The bays may be differentiated by colour applied around the edges thereof. More than two series of bays may be provided in which the sheets are turned over in pairs, or in sets of three or more. Instead of bay-shaped cut-out portions the upper and lower corners of alternate sheets may be cut away, the cuts on alternate sheets sloping in opposite directions. The parts adjacent the bays or cut-out portions may be reinforced or coloured to prevent numerals or other indications being visible through the pages, particularly where thin transparent paper is used.
