SAMUEL E. RHODES, OF IOLA, TEXAS.
BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letterslatent No. 683,497, dated October 1, 1901.
Application filed December 1, 1900. Serial No. 38.363. (ModeL) T0 ztZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. Rnonns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iola, in the county of Grimes, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Books; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to books in general, and. more particularly to account books wherein the pages are numbered both at the heads of the pages and also at the margins thereof, the object of the invention being to provide an arrangementof numbering and symbols that will indicate the different pages at a glance, irrespective of the number of hundreds of leaves within certain limits, the pages being indicated on both sides, so that if a book be opened at any point the tabs of the leaves will indicate the locations of the pages at both sides of the point where the book is opened.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for indicating the hundreds of the pages without necessitating using more than two figures to express the numbers of the pages, further objects and advantages of the invention being evident from the following description.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in both views, Figure 1 is a planview showing abook open at the first page, several of the leaves of the book being drawn back to show the tabs thereon. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 and showing the book opened near its middle to show the arrangement of numbers at both sides.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a book comprising a number of leaves 5 and which book in the present instance contains one hundred leaves or two hundred pages, although it may contain more, and these leaves are cut at both their side edges and their bottom edges to form marginal tabs, there being in the present instance two sets of tabs 6 and 7 at the side edges of the leaves, and two sets of tabs 8 and 9 at the bottom edges of the leaves. The tabs of "the series 6 and 8 are carried by the first fifty leaves, and the tabs of the series 7 and 9 are carried by the second fifty leaves, itbeing understood that there are fifty side tabs and fifty bottom tabs for each one-hundred pages.
Referring to the side series 6 and 7 of tabs, it will be noted that the first series of fifty leaves, which carry the first one hundred pages, are narrower than the second series of fifty leaves, so that the second series 7 of tabs may project beyond the series 6. The first tab of the series 6 of the side tabs is marked with 1, as illustrated, to indicate the first page, while the second tab of that series is marked 3. The second or outer series 7 of tabs is marked in .the same manner as the-inner series 6, with the exception of the firsttabs of' so that at a glance one may tell the proper tab to grasp to turn to any one of the first one hundred pages of the book and which tab to grasp to turn to any one of the second one hundred pages of the book. To further distinguish the relations of the columns to the hundreds of the pages, the first tab of the series 6 is marked 0 O 1, the 0 being shown within the inclosure of the G and the 1 following the O to take up a minimum of room upon the tab. The letter O stands for the hundreds, and 0 stands for the number of hundreds, and this marking of course indicates that that particular tab is connected with page no hundred and one,
or, in other words, with page one. The first tab of the second series is marked with the figure 1, the letter G, and the figure F 1, the first figure 1 being shown within the inclosure of the letter C and signifies that that tab is connected with page one hun- Fig. 2,the side edge tabs, with their numerals,
will be seen to the right and the bot-tom edge numerals will be seen to the left, the four series of tabs containing the numbers of all of the pages in the book. The first tab of the series Sis marked in the same manner as the first tab of the series 6, while the first tab of the series 9 is marked in the same manner as the first tab of the series 7. It will thus be seen that at a glance with the book open the location of the tab of any page in the book may be determined either to the right or left, so that any page may be turned to in an instant, and it will be appreciated that in a book having other hundreds of pages additional series of tabs will be formed at both the side and bottom edges and that other colors will be used for the numbering of these other tabs, the first tabs being marked first with a 0 containing a 2 and followed by 1 to indicate two hundred and one, and so on through the book.
What is claimed isl. A book having the leaves thereof cut at their side edges to form two or more series of tabs running from top to bottom of the book, one series of tabs projecting beyond the other series, and said leaves being also cut at their bottom edges to form two or more series of tabs running transversely of the book with one series projecting beyond the other, the
tab of the first leaf being shorter than the tab of the second leaf to expose a portion of the latter, and the tabs of the side series being cut reversely to the tabs of the bottom series, the tabs of the inner series being marked in one color to indicate that they belong to the first one hundred pages and the tabs of the outer series being marked in a different color to indicate that they belong to the second one hundred pages.
2. A book having the leaves thereof cut at the side edges to form two series of tabs, each tab projecting beyond the tab next above, and the bottom edges of the leaves being cut to form two other series of tabs, of which one tab projects beyond the next tab, the tabs at g the bottom edges of the leaves being cut reversely with respect to the tabs atthe side edges whereby a portion of the tabs of both the side and bottom edges of the book will be exposed when it is opened, the first tabs of the inner series being marked with a symbol to indicate that the tabs of that series belong to the first one hundred pages, and the first tabs of the outer series being marked with symbols to indicate that they belong to the second one hundred pages.
In testimony whereof I hereunto sign my name, in the presence of two subscribing Wit nesses, this 12th day of October, 1900.
SAMUEL E. RHODES. tVitnesses:
