[Class 16] An index tab, book marker, or signal for record or other sheets, cards, or the like comprises a V-shaped member the legs of which straddle the signal edge of a sheet and are each formed with an outwardly directed hook or foot in the plane of the tab 'adapted to interlock into openings in the sheet to hold the signal over the edge of the sheet. The signal is of celluloid or the like, and is preferably opaque. It is formed with two parallel-sided straight or curved legs 2 and with feet 5, set at right-angles to the legs, and is so proportioned that, when the feet 5 are engaged with the slots 3 in the sheet 4, the angle of the apex engages the edge of the card. The signal is formed with a single notch 8 or one leg adapted to reveal one of a single line of indices 7, or to conceal the index if the signal is reversed. Alternatively the signal is provided with a differently arranged hole in each leg so that one or other of a double row of staggered indices 7 can be revealed, or with a notch 8 and protuberance 9 on one or both legs, adapted to reveal or conceal one or other of a double series of indices 7 arranged above one another. The signals may be cut from a strip of material, and the notches and protuberances on each leg are complementary with each other but may differ from those on the other leg. The slots 3 may be two or more in number, and may be parallel to the edge of the sheet, or may be replaced by scored or weakened areas, which can be pierced by specially sharp feet 5. The signals may carry a printed or other index, or an impressed arrow directing attention to the revealed index on the sheet. The apex of the signal may be cut in the shape of a rectangular or lozenge shaped panel for carrying an index, or the inner edges of the legs may be joined by a straight or curved line instead of meeting at an angle so that the signal is of U-form and formed with a panel at the top to carry an index. Certain of the slots 3 may be arranged nearer the edge of the sheet, or the corresponding signal may have a more acute apical angle so that that signal is raised above the others. The signal may be made from wire, shaped as a U with feet, or may, if made of sheet material, be edged with wire, and the wire may be formed with a loop or a feathered portion to delineate or obscure an index, or may be shaped as a reference index above the apex. The signals may be of different colours and the slots be correspondingly marked.
