3 Claims.
'Ihis invention relates to book marks and more particularly to the type of book marks having means for indicating the particular side of the page, and the paragraph on the indicated side of the page Where the reading is discontinued.
An object of this invention is to provide a book mark which is of simple construction, can be cheaply made, and will be found especially adaptable for advertising purposes.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the front face of the book mark.
Figure 2 is a View similar to Figure 1 and looking at the rear or back face of the book mark.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the plate or body portion of the book mark.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the slide.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals it will be seen that the improved book mark consists of a substantially rectangular card or plate which may be made of Celluloid, paper or any other suitable material. At about its longitudinal median the plate 5 is provided with a relatively Wide elongated slot 6 terminating a material distance inwardly from the lower edge of the plate. Between the lower end of the slot 6 and said lower edge of plate 5, the latter is provided with a pair of relatively spaced short slits '7 through which is threaded an elongated slide 8 which is constrained to shift longitudinally of the plate 5. At one end, or at what may be termed its upper end, the slide 8 is provided on opposite side edges thereof with substantially V-shaped notches 9 forming pointers or indexes 10 extending in reverse directions and engaging the front side of the plate 5 together with a second pair of reversely extending pointers or indexes 1l engaging the rear face of the plate 5 as shown in Figure 2. Preferably the slide 8 is formed of the same material as is the plate 5.
On the front face thereof the blank or plate 5 is provided with a column of spaces 12 located at one side of the slot 6 and in each space is written the legend Left and beneath this legend a second legend Right. Over this column of spaces is written the explanatory legend 13. On the said front side of the plate or blank 5 adjacent the edge of the spaces 14 and in the spaces 14 are the numerals 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, '7, 8, 9 and 10. Over the column of spaces 14 is the explanatory legend 15.
From the description of the invention thus far it will be apparent that if a person, in reading a book has left off reading at the rst paragraph on the left side of the page the slide is moved to the position shown in Figure 1 so that the pointer or index 10 that is readable against the legends 50 in the spaces of column l2, is placed over the legend Left in the uppermost space 12 while the pointer A10 readable against the numerals in the spaces of column 14 is placed over the space l of said column. Thus with the parts positioned ,05
as described and shown in Figure 1 the reader when resuming his reading will readily ascertain through the medium of the book mark the fact that he left off reading at paragraph 1, on the course be understood that when the reader has left off readingand has properly positioned the slide 8 the book mark will be kept between the leaves or pages of the book so that the reader will left side of the page. In this connection it will of r also know the page as well as the side thereof, and .75
the paragraph thereon he was last in the act of reading.
On the rear or reverse side of the yblank 5 and also on the rear or reverse side of the slide 8 there may be any suitable indicia for advertis- -89 ing purposes or the like although in the present instance we have shown the reverse sides of the blank 5 and the slide 8 provided for use as a calendar.
Even though we have herein shown and def8-5 scribed the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same. is susceptible of further changes, modifications and improvements coming within the scope of the 90 slide at one end having reversely extending pointers passing through said opening and con-l tacting the plate like member at the side thereof opposite to the slide.
2. A book mark comprising a plate like member having an elongated slot, and a slide provided adjacent one end with pairs of reversely extending projections, the projections of one pair engaging one face of the plate at opposite sides of the slot, and the projections of the other pair extending through said slot and engaging thev through said elongated opening and engaging the plate at the side thereof opposite to the slide, and said plate on the last named side thereof being provided adjacent the longitudinal edges of the opening with columns of indicia spaces across which said pointers move when the slide is adjusted relative to the plate.
