1 claim. (c1. liii- 64) This invention relates to an index device which may be employed in connection with ledgers and has as its general object to provide an index, by reference to which, a page of the ledger on which I an account is kept, for example, in a given name,

Another object of the invention is to provide an index device especially designed for the reception of narrow strips of paper, upon which the necessary data may be printed or typewritten, the strips being visible `through transparent plies at either side of the device and covered in such a manner as to prevent their deterioration ,A from contact or moisture.

Another object of the invention is to provide an index device in which the strips, above referred to, may be readily removed or intel'- changed as may be found necessary or advisable.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specifically pointed out j in the appen-ded claim.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or correspo-nding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the index embodying the invention.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in elevation thereof, one of the index strips being shown dis- 'placed at one side of the index proper in position to be inserted into a respective one of the pockets of the index.

Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, this view likewise showing one of the strips.

Figure 4 is a vertical sectional View on the line 4 4 of Figure 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.

Figure .5 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 5 5 of Figure 1 looking in the direction indicated by thear'rows.V

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated' in the drawing, the index comprises two sheets of celluloid or other transparent material indicated by the numeral 1 and a ply 2 of paper, and the ply is preferablyof cardboard although any other material may be employed for the purpose. These plies are substantially of rectangular form. as shown in the drawing and their corners .are preferably rounded as indicated bythe numeral 3 and the plies are so assembled that the ply 2 will be intermediate and in marginal registration with the plies 1. The invention contemplates the insertion of the index slips, which are indicated by the numeral 4 in longitudinal rec-k tangular spaces which are formed between the plies 1 and the adjacent faces of the ply 2, and in order that these plies may be spaced at intervals so as t0 provide said spaces, spacing strips 5 of paper, or any other suitable relatively thin sheet material possessing, however, a thickness' greater than the thickness of the strips 4, are .arranged at intervals throughout the height of the said index with their Vends terminating at the lateral margins of the plies 1 and 2 and on a line midway between the lateral edges of the plies and likewise through the spacing strips 5 at the points in intersection therewith, theseA strips 5 being secured by lines of stitching 6 passing therethrough and through the said plies. In this manner, longitudinal oblong spaces, such as referred to above, are provided at both sides or" the index and the strips 4 are arranged in these spaces in the alphabetical order of the names impressed or written on the faces thereof as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing.

In order that the letter-bearing tabs may be associated with the several index devices employed in keeping with the index record, a tab pocket '7, formed of a rectangular thin transparent Celluloid blank is provided, which is folded upon itself to provide spaced portions 8, and has the ends of its said portions fitted between the plies 1 and 2 and secured by a transverse line of stitching 9 and a vertical line of stitching names which are led in the strip receiving pockets or spaces of the index.

In order that the strips 4 may be readily removed. frorn the recesses in which they are inserted, substantially V-shaped notches are formed in the vertical margins of each of the plies l iand in order that the index may be employed in a filing cabinet, notches 13 are formed in the lower margins of the plies 1 and 2 to straddletheH rods in the bottom of the ling cabinet drawer and preferably the plies 1 .and 2 are adhesively united to one another along their lower marginal portions so as to reinforce this portion of the index.

What I claim is :v

An indicator device of the class described comprising plies of transparent material, a ply of vasf lparent material folded to provide spaced fold portions, having their lower margins secured between the upper margins of the flrst mentioned plies,

' anda line of stitching uniting the outer side xnargins of the said fold portions.
