Description
y 1961 I J. K. SEITZ 2,982,322 Q CARD-CARRYING CASE 0R POCKET SECRETARY Filed Feb. 17, 1959 I I LA IN VENTOR. (/OJEPH ,6 55/72 States... Patent or:
cARD cARRYrNG'cAsE-oR Poem snc T RY This invention relates to card-carrying cases or pocket secretaries, and particularly to such an article which has interchangeable inserts for varying the capacity thereof.
Card-carrying cases or secretaries are 'known wherein the pockets are constructed from sheets or leaves of transparent flexible plastic, sewed or glued to a plastic or leather cover along a folding center line of the cover and sheets. These prior cases have a fixed number of pockets therein and were not expandable to accommodate additional cards after the pockets of the case were filled. The present invention is a card-carrying case or pocket secretary wherein the card pocket sheets or leaves are attached along their center folding line to the edge of a stiffening member which may be inserted between the outer portion of the cover and an internal flap attached along two or three edges to the cover. These inserts may have different numbers of pockets, but when any one insert being used is filled, another insert may be placed opposite the first one for additional cards. Until the additional insert is required, the other section of the -carrying pockets are insertable' at will on one or both sides of the case cover.
A better understanding of this invention may be had from the following detailed description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. lis a perspective view showing a card-carrying case embodying the invention partially open;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a card pocket insert unit embodied in the invention;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the inside of the case cover;
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and 1 v Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 55 of Fig. 2.
Referring, now, to the drawings in which the same reference numerals identify like elements, a case cover 5 may be of plastic, leather, or similar material, and is foldable along a center line 6. As shown in Fig. 3, the inner right-hand side of the case is provided with an internal flap 8 which extends just short of the center folding line 6 and which is provided with a slit 9 in which a note pad may be inserted if desired. Flap 8 is sewed or glued along its three outer edges to the right side of the case cover as shown at 10. On the lefthand side of the cover is a flap 11 having an upper rounded corner to facilitate the insertion of money,
2,982,322 Patented'li/lay 2, 1961 memoranda, or other papers. The flap 11 is sewed along its two'outer edges as shown at 13 to the left side of thecasecover. v a
Referrin'g, now,"to Fig. 2, four pocket sections or le'avesof flexible transparent plastic are shown at 14, 14', 15, and 15, each of which is provided with three card-holding sections '16, 17, and 18, the cards being inserted along openings as shown at 20, 21, and 22. That is, the sections 14 and'14 aremade from two sheets of plastic,"and sections 15 and 15' are made fromtwo other sheets of plastic sewed or glued along their center fold line, as shown at 24 in Fig. 5. The sheets are then sewed or glued along their outer edges, as shown at 27 and 28. The sheets are then glued or sewed along transverse lines, such as shown at 30, to form the card- pocket sections 16, 17, and 18. Small portions of the upper sheet adjacent the central transverse lines 30 attaching the sheets together are then removed to form slits or entrances 21 and 22 to the pocket sections 16 and 17, the entrance 20 being formed by the upper sheet being shorter than the under sheet. Two cards may now be inserted in each pocket, such as 16, 17, and 18, one card facing in one direction and the other card facing in the opposite direction, both cards being observable through the transparent plastic when the leaf is turned. As shown at 24, the four sections are sewed or glued to a more rigid backing member 25 which may be of plastic and insertable between the outer portion of the case and the inner flap 8.
As mentioned above, although four groups of pocket sections are illustrated, it is realized that more than four may be used. Since these sections are arranged in pairs, they are increasable by two. Furthermore, more or less card-holding pockets may 'be used by increasing and decreasing the over-all length of the case, since the size of each pocket is substantially the same.' Thus, a certain case may contain inserts on flap 8 with dilferent numbers of card pockets or contain inserts on both flaps 8 and 11 with difierent numbers of card pockets, depend ing upon the number of cards desired to be carried.
Furthermore, since the case cover 5 may be quite expensive compared with the insert units, a certain insert unit carrying acertain group of cards can be quickly interchanged .for another insert unit carrying another group of cards.
I claim:
I. A card-carrying insert for a backing cover having at least one inner flap, said insert comprising a plurality of super-imposed transparent rectangular flexible sheets, a pair of ,said sheets being attached along three outer edges thereof and also along at least one transverse line parallel to the fourth edge of said sheets and connecting opposite attached edges to provide a space between said sheets, said sheets being attached along a center line between opposite attached edges of said sheets, one sheet of each pair having a slit therein adjacent said parallel transverse line of attachment to provide an entrance to a pocket formed from said space, and a semi-rigid sheet insertable in said one inner flap, said semi-rigid sheet being of substantially one-half the size of said sheets, one edge of said semi-rigid sheet being attached to said plurality of sheets along said center line of attachment of said sheets.
2. A card-carrying insert in accordance with claim 1 in which the distance between the'free edge of said slit in said one sheet and the transverse line of attachment between said sheets is shorter than the distance between said attached transverse line of said sheets and an outer attached edge of said sheets.
3. A card-carrying insert in accordance with claim 1 in which one of said pairs of sheets is shorter in a direction parallel with the opposite attached edges of said sheets and in which the distance between the free edge of said slit in said one sheet and the transverse lineof attachment between said sheets is shorter than the distance between said attached transverse line of said pair of sheets and an outer attached edge of said sheets. v
4. A card-carrying insert in accordance with claim 1 in which a plurality of substantially equally spaced paral: lel transverse lines of attachment between said sheets parallel to the fourth edge of said sheets and-connecting opposite attached edges of said sheets isprovided to provide a plurality of spaces between said sheets, one sheet of each pair having slits therein adjacent certain of said parallel transverse lines of attachment to provide entrances to pockets formed from said spaces.
