Description

C. B. WRIGHT Nov. 9, 1965 HOLDER Filed Dec. 6, 1965 WEAPEPIS NAME HERE PQOGQAM INVENTOR.
m M y z United States Patent 3,216,135 HOLDER Charles B. Wright, St. Louis, Mo., assignor to Gabriel G. Tauber, Washington, DC. Filed Dec. 6, 1963, Ser. No. 328,757 3 Claims. (CI. 40-15) This invention relates to holders, and more specifically, to holders for identity cards or the like adapted for display on wearing apparel.
It is customary at meetings, conventions, and similar social .and business gatherings, to provide the participants or delegates with identification badges adapted to be pinned or otherwise secured to their wearing apparel. Such badges have been found objectionable from the standpoint of damage to clothing, frequent loss, and irregularity of placement on the clothing. A primary object of the present invention is to provide a dual purpose badge holder having an adjunctive compartment for the storage of a convention program card, directory, or the like, which is adapted for positioning on apparel in a standard, uniform location, without damage to the clothing, and which is unlikely to become lost.
Another important object of this invention is to supply a compound badge holder and carrying case adapted to fit in the breast pocket of a coat and to be held therein in a location with the badge holding component thereof exposed to view in substantially uniform locations, and which is readily placed in and removed from the pocket.
Another object is to provide a holder as aforesaid wherein there is provided a flap means to engage a pocket upper edge.
Still another object resides in the provision of a dual compartment holder of the type described above, the holder having a lower compartment of increased size and weight with respect to the upper badge holding compartment thereof whereby it serves as an anchoring means therefor.
A further object is to supply a holder as specified above, and groups of identity badges for use therewith.
Among the general objectives of the invention as hereinbefore set forth are the provision of a holder of the class described which is non-complex in construction and assembly, inexpensive to manufacture and sell in bulk quantities, and durable in use.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a consideration of the following specification when read in conjunction with the annexed drawing, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view showing utilization of a holder constructed and assembled in accordance with the teachings of this invention in a breast pocket of substantially standard depth;
FIGURE 2 is a view similar to FIGURE 1, but showing the manner of usage of the holder with a pocket of greater than standard depth;
FIGURE 3 is a disassembled frontal plan view of the holder and typical contents thereof;
FIGURE 4 is an enlarged, vertical cross sectional view taken substantially on the section line 44 of FIGURE 3, looking in the direction of the arrows; and
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of a group of identity badges as supplied with the holders hereof.
Referring to the drawing in greater detail, a holder of this invention, which may be of various sizes, is generally designated by reference numeral 10, and is formed of transparent material, preferably a soft plastic. The holder comprises a pair of panels including an elongated, substantially rectangular transparent front panel 12 having an upper edge portion 14, and lower edge portion 16. The panel 14 further includes a first side edge por- 3,216,135 Patented Nov. 9, 1965 tion 18 and an opposite side edge 20. As best seen in FIGURE 3, the edge 20 has a semicircular indentation 22 cut therefrom for a purpose described in more detail below.
The holder 10 is further comprised of an elongated, substantially rectangular rear panel 24 which has upper and lower edge portions 26, 28, respectively, and side edge portions 30 and 32.
As will be seen in the drawing, the respective upper edge portions 14 and 26, lower edge portions 16 and 28, and the side edge portions 18 and 20 are aligned with one another with the panels juxtaposed, and are fixed together by any suitable means such as by heat sealing, or the like. With these portions thus aligned and fixed together, the side edge 20 of the front panel 12 is spaced inwardly from the side edge portion 32 of the rear panel 24. Thus, the panels are readily separated along the edge 20 by reason of its inward spacing.
The front and rear panels 12 and 24 are secured to one another along a transverse line of connection 34 formed by heat sealing or other suitable means as described in more detail below. This connection extends from the edge 20 to the edge portions 18 and 30 and serves to form a pair of compartments comprising an upper compartment 36 and a lower compartment 38 preferably of larger size than the upper compartment. Access to each compartment is between the edge 20 of the upper panel and the edge portion 32 of the lower panel. The cutout 22 serves as an aid in spacing the panels for access to the larger lower compartment which is generally used for a program, directory, or like article 40 which requires more frequent access. The article 40 often has multiple folds or layers (not shown) and is of substantial weight and mass by comparison with the badge 42 stored in the upper compartment 36. The badge 42 comprises a substantially rectangular indicia-bearing card which may have the wearers name inscribed on one side and the opposite side may have instructions for use of the holders, advertising materials, or the like.
In FIGURE 5 there is illustrated a strip of cards 42 as supplied with the holders 10, which strip is perforated along lines 44 between each card for ease in the separation thereof.
The transverse line of connection between the panels 12 and 24 may, as set forth above, be by any suitable connecting means, but preferably comprises heat seals of spaced, vertical arrangement best seen in FIGURES 3 and 4, each forming a rigidifying rib 46 with ends aligned in an upper line 48 and a lower line 50. A substantially U-shaped slit, having a bight portion 52 and sides 54 and 56 is formed in the front panel 14 adjacent the line of connection 34, and the sides terminate at the lower line 50. This slit forms a flap 57 of generally rectangular form hingedly connected to the front panel along the line 50.
Alternative arrangements which may be employed in the usage of the holders are seen in FIGURES 1 and 2. In FIGURE 1, the holder 10 is disposed in a breast pocket 58 having a pocket upper edge 60 with the lower edges of the holder resting against the pocket bottom 62the pocket dimension being such that the upper compartment 36 is in a viewable location and its card 42 may therefore be seen. In FIGURE 2 however, the pocket 58a is of a depth such that the upper compartment would be concealed in the pocket if the holder rested on the pocket bottom 62a, and the wearer has therefore engaged the flap 57 over the pocket edge 60a which serves to locate the upper compartment in a uniform, exposed position.
Having described and illustrated this invention in detail, it will be understood that this description and illustration is offered merely by way of example, and that the invention is to be limited in scope only by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
