Description

REMOVABLE PAGE AND BOOKMARK Filed Feb. 2, 1950 TELEPHONE NUMBERS OFTEN CALLED- FIRE POLICE HOSPITAL NAME NUMBER INVENTOR 1 BY 7 I I I ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 25, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Clarence Heckendorn, Charlotte, N. 0.
Application February 2, 1950, Serial No. 141,902
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a removable reference card in the form of a page having the characteristics of a book-mark, the primary object of the invention being to provide a sheet or page of semi-rigid material which is so constructed and arranged that it may be readily positioned between selected leaves of a book providing a book-mark.
Another object of the invention is to provide a removable page or book-mark having means for setting up friction between the book-mark and pages between which it is positioned, thereby maintaining the card or book-mark against accidental displacement.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a book-mark which is ruled to provide columns in which certain printed matter may be placed for ready reference purposes, indicating frequently called telephone numbers.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view of a book showing a book-mark or removable page constructed in accordance with the invention as positioned between adjacent pages of a book.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the book-mark.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the center portion of the book-mark, illustrating the bookmark as positioned between the leaves of a book.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view through a modified form of book-mark.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view through a further modified form of book-mark.
Fig. 6 is an elevational view illustrating the form of book-mark as shown by Fig. 5 of the drawing. -f
Fig. '7 .is a view illustrating a further form of the book-mark.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the refe ence character 5 indicates a book, which in the present showing may be a telephone directory, the book being provided with the insertible page or book-mark forming the subject matter of the present invention; the page or book-mark being indicated. by the reference character 6.
The book-mark is formed preferably of a sheet of semi-rigid material such as cardboard, heavy 2 paper or the like, the book-mark being substantially rectangular in form and approximately the size of the pages of the book in which the bookmark is used.
As clearly shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing, a tab 1 is formed along one of the longitudinal edges of the insertible page or book-mark, the tab extending throughout the entire width of the page or book-mark so that the tab is braced to prevent the tab from becoming severed from the main portion of the page or book-mark, due to constant opening of the book in which the book-mark is positioned. As shown, the tab provides a point 8 located between the ends thereof, the surfaces of the point 8 of the tab being provided with friction material 9 which may be in the form of rubber to set up friction between the page or book-mark, and the pages of the book between which the tab is inserted. thereby holding the tab in position against displacement.
Due to the shape of the tab 1, it will be obvious that the major portion of the tab is disposed between adjacent leaves of the book with which it is used, securel holding the page or book-mark against shifting from its original position between the pages of the book.
As shown by Fig. 5 of the drawing, the boss I0 is provided at the point of the tab, the boss being formed by directing pressure to one surface of the tab causing the opposite surface of the tab to bulge. This form of friction means will become wedged between adjacent leaves of the book with which the page or book-mark is used, holding the book-mark in place.
As shown by Fig. 7, friction means in the form of enlargements H are provided at the point of the tab, the enlargements being formed at opposite sides of the tab, the enlargements being constructed of rubber cement of the type which, hardens and provides friction surfaces to be wedged between the pages of a book.
It is contemplated to rule the faces of the insertible page or book-mark to provide columns or spaces for recording selected numbers and names frequently called, so that a person may have ready access thereto.
Since the insertible page or book-mark is constructed of semi-rigid material of a thickness greater than the thickness of the leaves of the book with which it is" used, the pages of the book between which the insertible page or bookmark is positioned, will-separate at the particular marking place when the ,book is opened.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a substantially thick page having means whereby it may be inserted between selected pages of a book, the friction means carried thereby wedging between adjacent leaves of a book to securely hold the insertible page or book-mark in a predetermined position for ready access thereto.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A book-mark comprising a body portion formed of a substantially rectangular sheet of semi-rigid material, one longitudinal edge of the body portion being straight, the other longitudinal edge of the body portion being inclined inwardly from a point intermediate the ends of said edge, providing a narrow tab intermediate the ends of 4 one edge of the body portion, said tab adapted to be wedged between leaves of a book at a point where the leaves of the book are secured together, securing the book-mark in position, place marking the book.
