Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 22, 1921.
Application filed April 24, 1918. Serial No. 230,420.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD VAN WIGKLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blank Books with Rulers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in blank books and has for its object to provide a blank book with a scaled ruler whereby the blank sheets of the book may be ruled.
Another object of the invention is to provide a blank book having a flexible cover with a scaled ruler formed directly on the cover.
A still further object of the invention is to provide in a blank book having a flexible cover, a ruler fixed to the edge of the cover.
lVith the above and other objects in view, I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the several views in the drawings the numeral 10 designates in general a blank book or pad having a flexible cover 11 connected by a flexible binding strip 12 to the back of the book, while to the front edge 13 of the cover is attached a ruler 14. This ruler may be formed of any suitable material such as cardboard, celluloid, wood or thin metal and reinforced and stiffened by the edge 13 of the cover. The manner of using this ruler in connection with the leaves 15 of the book is illustrated in Fig. 2 in the drawings. In ruling the inner leaves, the outer leaves may be flexed with the cover 11, in order that the ruler may be properly positioned on the exposed leaf.
The edge 16 of the back cover 17 ma also be provided with a ruler 18 whereby tie reverse sides of the leaves 15 may be ruled.
The rulers 14 and 18 are provided with scales 19 indicating inches and fractions thereof for the purpose of laying off the sheets of the book or pad 10.
While this form of blank book construction is especially adapted for use in connection with scratch pads and other blank books used for school purposes, however, it is adaptable for use for many other purposes as well.
If the cover 11 is of sufficient stiffness the ruler 19 may be printed directly on the edge 1 of said cover.
Having described my invention, that which I claim to be new and desire to pro cure by Letters Patent is:
1. A pad or blank book having a plurality of blank leaves confined together at one edge and a linear scale on the surface adjacent the opposite free edge of the outer leaf for use in ruling and determining the lengths of lines when drawing on any page of said pad or book against which the scale is placed.
2. The combination of a blank book composed of a plurality of leaves fixed at one edge, and a ruler having a linear scale there.
on, secured to the surface adjacent the edge of the first leaf for application to the other leaves of said book whereby each page may be ruled with lines of varying lengths determined by the scale on said ruler, said first leaf forming the upper cover of the book.
8. A blank book having its leaves secured between flexible covers, and a graduated ruler on one of said covers adjacent its unconfined edge, said cover and ruler together constituting a straight edge movable over the pages of the book and affording means for laying off parallel vertical lines of definite length.
